What is an AFCI Breaker?
Short for “Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter”, AFCI breakers are a relatively recent solution to a problem that has plagued homes and businesses since the 1920s. Before AFCIs, arc faults were one of the leading causes of electrical fires. In reaction to this problem, the National Electrical Code established the need for AFCIs in all circuits feeding bedrooms of homes in the beginning of the 21st century. Later versions of the code increased the need, requiring their presence in all outlets and equipment in a living space.
